Day 85 - Skeena River - Prince Rupert

Tried to get packed up and away early as rain was forecast for mid afternoon so was keen to avoid the worst of that. Although dry, the cloud had returned, shrouding the mountains save for a few lines of fir trees at their base.

With sightseeing limited, I tried to press on into town although was slowed by an unexpected climb 10 miles out. Still, as I navigated the streets of Prince Rupert towards the hotel I was thankful for having beaten the rain. The room wasn’t ready so went over the road to Tim Hortons - the first of the trip!

On returning to the hotel I was told the room was ready so headed upstairs only to find it was still being cleaned. Cue awkward moment as I sat outside whilst the poor cleaners rushed to get it ready. There’s been a strong Faulty Towers element to many of the places I’ve stayed, which I guess comes from seeking out the cheapest available motels.

I’m afraid Rupert joins the list of fairly run down and depressing towns in northern BC, few of which seem to have replaced the mining industry which brought their initial wealth. Although apparently the increased use of the ferry port is helping to bring people through the town. In its favour, the Main Street is visually quite nice, even if the current shop occupiers were fairly drab. I did find a nice brewery though for a pint and a pizza.

Back to the hotel via the supermarket to chill and try and get an early night before the ferry. Although I tend to spend my nights in motels flicking through the trash on tv, or watching baseball.

Alarm set for 5am - the first time I’ve set one in about 3 months. A taster for a return to the real world.
