Day 83 - New Aiyansh - Terrace

Had coffee and a muffin with Colin whilst Cat meditated/did yoga in the purpose built space. I wasn’t too surprised when Colin told me he had all his money invested in crypto, to which I explained it wasn’t really my thing. But said goodbyes and thanked them again for all their kindness.

Before meeting Cat and Colin I’d arranged a Warmshowers stay in Terrace so I was feeling slightly guilty that I’d again be leaning on the kindness of strangers for another night - especially with a slightly depleted social battery.

A really nice ride which followed a series of rivers and lakes down the valley. Stopped at a little grocery store for some lunch where people were really interested in my ride. It feels fairly nonsensical at this point to say I started in San Diego, especially given the route I’ve taken, and requires a bit of explaining. Was told about a tree down the road which somebody had driven a spring water pipe through and was known locally as the ‘peeing tree’. So I had to stop there to fill up. The rest of the day was a series of rolling hills before getting to the edge of town. Terrace appeared to be much wealthier than most of the smaller towns I’d been through in northern BC, with some nice houses as I made my way to the Warmshowers hosts, Geoff and Karen.

After showering and heading into the kitchen to meet Karen, I was quickly greeted by a ‘I fucking hate Trump’. Whilst I said I agreed, this set the tone for the evening of Karen getting extremely exercised about things she’d seen/read and a clearly exasperated Geoff trying to calm her down and remind her she doesn’t live in the States. In between, Geoff and I talked about cycling and the trip he was about to do through Germany and the Czech Republic. More very welcome home cooked food of steak, vegetables and salad. Karen seemed to think I needed fattening up so insisted I kept eating.

It’s difficult to keep outlining the sense of gratitude but it is amazing to just turn up at a stranger’s door for them to feed and water you and give you a bed for the night.
