Day 30 - Routt National Forest - Steamboat Springs

Woke up to a lovely morning from our hill top campsite. Once on the road there were a series of steep climbs to reach the top of Lynx Pass proper. Legs immediately didn’t feel great, so I could tell it was going to be a bit of a slog of a day - despite it being a big net downhill day.

Some really nice sections along streams and beside reservoirs. The final paved section into town was a bit of a battle with the wind, which had really picked up by the afternoon.

I felt pretty cooked by the time I got into town so immediately got some fluids and food in. Then a slightly frustrating trip to the only supermarket in town itself which had nothing of use, except at exorbitant prices. Should have stopped at Walmart on the way in. Headed over to the house I’d arranged to stay at and was greeted by Michelle, who was lovely and I was able to shower and sort my stuff before heading back into town for a pizza.

Steamboat was incredibly busy and is clearly a place people come for their holidays, both in summer, and in winter when it is a major ski centre. Some of the properties coming into town were extremely fancy and it was obviously a place for those with money to come and enjoy themselves.

I met Michelle’s husband Steve when I got back and they were busy preparing their deck and garden for the bikers they’re expecting over the next few weeks. It's really cool that people along the route do things like this. It felt like a day just to get through as the legs weren’t really there and the cumulative effect of a month on the road.
