Day 75 - Little Fish Lake - Meziadin Junction

It rained pretty heavily throughout the night and despite best efforts the tent was still very wet when it came to packing up.

Once back onto the road, I soon came across a rather ramshackle looking encampment in the woods and then remembered that I’d seen signs for a dog sanctuary the night before. Although the resemblance was closer to an internment camp than anything that could be described as a sanctuary. A bit further up the road I came across a pack of dogs who had seemingly taken themselves for a walk. Thankfully they were inquisitive rather than aggressive. Although I had to question their judgement as they were heading back in the direction of the ‘sanctuary’.

The road was also very well appointed with bear poo so I was glad the dogs were the only animals I encountered. Following a short, steep climb I rejoined the highway. Although not Highway 16 this time but the Cassiar-Stewart Highway, which is the main route up to Yukon and then into Alaska. Lots more evidence of bears but still no sighting.

The initial plan had been to camp at Meziadin Junction but after looking online the campground was not allowing tent camping due to bear activity at the site. I therefore had no choice but to stay at the lodging they had next to the gas station. I think these are mainly to cater for people working in the mines nearby or truck drivers. And perhaps in solidarity with the dogs, it also slightly resembled a prison. The whole set-up was very odd and the sort of place where the guest was just expected to know things - which I guess is the case if you’re mainly caring for return clients rather than tourists. Anyway, I at least got some hot food and then retreated to my room/cell.
